Book Club - Men

Activity Leader: Harold Gabriel

Book Club Name : Men Who Read

WANTED:  MEN WHO READ!

The CHN Men’s Book Group is a monthly gathering to share reactions and insights in lively discussion about the month’s selection, be it a workof history, biography, science, or even the occasional novel.  It’s an opportunity to learn about a time, place, or subject that usually we’ve heard about but never knew in depth.   Recent selections include The Pioneers, by David McCullough, Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker, and Genghis Kahn and the Making of the Modern World, by Jack Weatherford.  Think Ohio was always placid?  Think you can catch up on missed sleep?  Think the Mongols were all about chaos and conquest?  We find that a deeper dive into any subject triggers greater learning and good discussion.

Men's Book Club News

We have 14 current active members meeting monthly via Zoom since March and now via the Club's GoToMeeting platform.

Although our selections mostly have been history and biography, we have also read and greatly enjoyed the novels of Keith Yocum, who is one of our members.  Keith's books have great characters, gripping stories, and are readily available from Amazon.

The two most recent books our group has read and discussed are:

> The Witches: Suspicion, Betrayal, & Hysteria in 1692 Salem, by Stacy Schiff (2016) 512 pages  – many copies available in the CLAMS system, including at least one eBook,

and

> Ardennes 1944: The Battle of the Bulge, by Anthony Beevor (2015) 475 pages – many copies available in the CLAMS system, including electronic copies.

 Under consideration for November are:

> Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam, by Mark Bowden (2017) 608 pages – many copies available in the CLAMS system, including electronic copies;

> The Enduring Shore: A History of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, by Paul Schneider (2001) – many copies available in the CLAMS system, including at least one eBook

> The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey, by Rinker Buck (2016) 464 pages - many  hard copies available in the CLAMS system - no Kindle copies in CLAMS

There is also strong support for mixing in works of fiction into our selections, especially after the success with Keith's books.

Many thanks to you and the other officers for keeping the Club active and visible in these trying times.

Best regards,

Harold
